At its new development in Cary, N.C., one of the Martha Stewart-designed model town homes is expressly outfitted for a single man. With dark wood cabinets, black granite countertops, and chrome appliances, it has a large kitchen and oversize dining room. Gray walls throughout, an oversize shower off the master bedroom rather than a bath, and a higher-than-average bathroom sink all nod to the guy that KB Homes is trying to attract. It's an unusual move since women have long been the driving force behind home purchases, but CEO Bruce Karatz notes that men are marrying later and divorce is more common, which means more of today's home buyers are single.
