Emergency nurses take care of patients during their most critical stages of illness or injury, according to Education-Portal.com. Certified emergency nurses specialize in the initial care and treatment of patients during a crisis and are not the same as trauma nurses, who sometimes care for patients during the entire process of recovery from a trauma. Certified emergency nurse training programs give students the medical background and hands-on training they need to grow in this field.To become a certified emergency nurse, an individual must first become a registered nurse. This involves completing a two-year associate degree in nursing, a three-year hospital-administered nursing diploma or a four-year nursing bachelor's degree. These programs usually require students to complete a certain number of supervised practical experience hours in addition to courses on subjects such as pharmacology, human physiology and critical care nursing, according to Western Governors University.
