Consisting of five companies, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) began in 1998. At that time, it officially adopted the name "Bluetooth." While many people refer to "Bluetooth phones," Bluetooth is actually a technology and not a phone. The benefits of Bluetooth technology are most evident when different technologies are able to communicate with each other via the Bluetooth system. Since it is basically an ultra-low frequency radio signal, it can transmit data over short distances without needing wires. It also allows an individual to wear a small headset connected to a cell phone in the pocket, allowing for "hands-free" communication, useful when communicating while on the road.
