Weather Maps

A weather map displays various meteorological features across a particular area at a particular point in time and has various symbols which all have specific meanings. Such maps have been in use since the mid-19th century and are used for research and weather forecasting purposes. Maps using isotherms show temperature gradients, which can help locate weather fronts. Isotach maps, analyzing lines of equal wind speed, on a constant pressure surface of 300 mb or 250 mb show where the jet stream is located. Use of constant pressure charts at the 700 and 500 hPa level can indicate tropical cyclone motion. Two-dimensional streamlines based on wind speeds at various levels show areas of convergence and divergence in the wind field, which are helpful in determining the location of features within the wind pattern. A popular type of surface weather map is the surface weather analysis, which plots isobars to depict areas of high pressure and low pressure. World Weather

Weather is the most talked about subject even tho it all happens every year in it's right season.
Weather is the specific condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time. It is measured in terms of such things as wind, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, cloudiness, and precipitation. In most places, weather can change from hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. Climate is the average of weather over time and space. A simple way of remembering the difference is that climate is what you expect (eg cold winters) and 'weather' is what you get (eg a blizzard).In order to improve weather forecasting, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) promotes the the World Weather Watch (WWW) program that modernizes the meteorological services of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) by utilizing the latest results of science and technology under the cooperation of the WMO member countries. The main purpose of the WWW program is to observe weather around the world uniformly. Meteorological satellites that have a capability to observe a wide range of the earth from space are exactly suitable for this role.

5 Day Forecast

Last night on the local evening news the weather forecast was for rain and thunderstorms in North Georgia today. Now I know that we have made fun of weather forecasters in the past but this is one time that everyone in Metro Atlanta should want this forecast to be correct. After all we have not had much rain in Atlanta since mid November when I asked for Spare Water.
Recently we have had small trace amounts of rain that really did not provide any measurable relief to the drought. They were helpful in replacing some ground water which will make today’s rain so much more beneficial. It is currently a very steady rain and according to the weather maps, much of it is falling over the Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona basin’s. This will be extremely helpful in replenishing some of the water we so desperately need in these lakes. Can They Be Partially Right Part of the forecast for today is for thunderstorms. Even though we need the rain, getting it too quickly can be bad for erosion. So I hope the forecasters are correct in that we will get between 1 and 2 inches of rain today, just not all at one time in a violent thunderstorm.

Tide Chart

The table below shows predicted tide information for Cape Porpoise Harbor, Maine for the month of October, 2001. Tables like this are generated for locations all along the coasts of the U.S. The charts for each site may be very different, even for locations that are quite close to each other. This is because tides vary according to the shape and depth of the body of water as well as to the geographical location.
Tide heights in the table are compared to the average low water level for that location. A negative tide height indicates the water level will be below the average low water line.

Understanding tide tables and charts is quite easy once you understand a few key topics. The chart below will help you see how the currents move and just what to expect during the changes. The Oregon coast has its' share of rip currents and the unexpected "sneaker waves" so the rule of thumb "never turn your back to the ocean" can save many lives each year.
